I First Chose Freshwater Pearls for Their Recognized Value
When I first began working with freshwater pearls, my reasons were practical.
Customers recognized cultured freshwater pearls as valuable materials and were often more willing to accept a higher price when genuine pearls were included in a design.
At the same time, many customers preferred pearls that appeared round, smooth, and consistent. Lines, uneven surfaces, and irregular shapes were often viewed as defects. That way of thinking influenced me as well.
As a wholesale jewelry supplier, variation could also create practical challenges. Differences in size and shape affected the number of pearls required for a necklace and sometimes changed its finished length. Reordering the same tone, surface, or shape at another time was not always easy.
When an expensive strand included pearls that could not be used in the intended design, I initially saw them mainly as a loss.
My perspective began to change when I learned more about how cultured freshwater pearls are formed.
Human Skill Begins the Process, but a Living Mollusk Completes It
Cultured pearl production begins with human knowledge, skill, and careful intervention.
However, the final pearl develops inside a living mollusk over time. Its shape and surface cannot be controlled in exactly the same way as a manufactured component.
A baroque pearl is not imperfect simply because its shape is irregular or its surface is not perfectly smooth. These natural variations are part of how each pearl was formed.
Understanding this did not mean lowering my quality standards.
When selecting pearls, I still consider their luster, surface condition, shape, proportion, color, suitability for the intended design, and wholesale price. I avoid pearls with severe cracks or badly damaged surfaces.
But I no longer view every visible line, uneven texture, or irregular curve only as a flaw. As a designer, I can use these natural lines and textures as part of the design.

To be honest, I first began working with them partly for practical reasons. Their distinctive appearance gave them a higher perceived value in the market, and customers often responded positively to their unusual shape.

Instead, I select the elements that can give a design a current feeling without making it dependent on one particular season. This balance between lasting materials and carefully chosen trends is part of what gives HANAÉ jewelry its distinctive character.
Because pearls and gemstones are materials that can remain beautiful over time, I believe the components and finishing used around them should reflect the same standard of lasting quality.
The chain, clasp, metal components, connections, and finishing are not separate from the design. They should support the value of the pearls and gemstones used in the finished piece.
Natural Variation and Individual Character
For boutique owners and wholesale buyers, natural variation can raise questions about consistency. However, natural variation does not mean inconsistent quality.
Because each cultured freshwater pearl is slightly different, small variations in shape and surface may appear even within the same design. These subtle differences do not change the design; they give each finished piece its own natural character.
